Defeat the Master Swordsman

As soon as you get to Firelink Shrine, take a left from the entrance and climb up around the side to find a weird almost naked man wielding a katana. Engage him and watch for his hold stance that has him sheathe his weapon to either parry or lunge, and bait out his attacks to retaliate and kill him.

You'll win from him his prized katana, the Uchigatana, a weapon that is great for those favoring dexterity, as it can unleash a lot of damage early game. What's more, you'll also be able to summon the Master Swordsman in front of the first boss fight at the High Wall of Lothric (make sure you use an Ember to be able to summon!)

Get a Torch

A simple but obvious item to overlook, the Shrine Handmaid sells a Torch from the moment you first enter Firelink Shrine. It's very affordable, and will be invaluable as you begin to explore some of the darker areas in the game, where you can stave off unwanted ambushes by seeing them ahead of time.

The Secret of Firelink Shrine's Rooftop

As you explore Firelink Shrine, you may note the side passage out of the top floor to a locked belltower door. The Handmaid sells the key for a whopping 20,000 souls which is a lot to ask for early in the game, but you should try to get it sometime around the Undead Settlement. However if you aren't content to wait, you can always try using a trick to get up to the lower roof: From the belltower door, look down to see a large tree stump to the left of a lower roof. If you try sprinting up, you can perform a running jump and curve to the right to leap over the gap onto the rooftops. It may take some tries, but it is possible. From here, you can go around to the rooftops at the front of the shrine to find an entrance to the rafters above - where a corpse holds an Estus Shard, and an odd Crow will trade certain items with you. If you look at the far back wall where a narrow beam ends at a wall, you can strike it to reveal an illusory wall with a path leading behind the thrones to a chest holding a Covetous Silver Serpent Ring, which can greatly increase the amount of souls you'll obtain at this stage in the game.

Find a Bow

Unless your class started with a bow, it can be helpful to have a ranged option to fights that may be dangerous up close. When arriving at the High Wall of Lothric, you can head right along the wall to another small tower where you can find a Longbow and some arrows - just be careful of ambushes!

Get an Infused Axe and Great Sword

These weapons can be tricky to obtain, but are well worth the effort. Continue along the High Wall of Lothric until a large dragon appears to spread fire over an upper walkway. There are a few items up on the wall, and you'll need to be fast to sprint along to find a Claymore among them before jumping off the side to avoid getting toasted. If you can sprint under the Dragon's perch, you'll find a room under the tower with a Mimic posing as a chest. This can be tough enemy to face early on, but the Deep Battle Axe reward is one of the first magical damage dealing weapons you can find for free.

Rescue Greirat

If you look under the tower with the Bonfire opposite the dragon, you may find the cell of a thief on the bottom floor. To bust him out, traverse the rooftops down to a large building with an open barracks area full of dogs and axe-wielding Hollow. There's some stairs on the bottom floor leading a dead end where you can find a key to the cell. Greirat of the Undead Settlement will join you if you let him, and if you agree to a favor, he'll sell you some great items, and may find even more to sell should you keep helping him.

Find the three spell users in the Undead Settlement

There's not one - but three different people you can find and rescue in the Undead Settlement, each proficient in a particular style of magic.

Yoel of Londor is a pilgrim that can be found at the end of the broken bridge near where you enter the settlement, and will not only sell sorceries, but draw your your true strength with free levels that will cause you to Hollow.

Cornyx of the Great Swamp is locked in cage hanging off the tall building in the middle of the entire settlement, requiring you to drop down a cliff ledge below to climb onto the roof from the other side, and defeat the firebomb-throwing villagers before speaking with him. He'll teach you pyromancies, and even reinforce your Pyromancy Flame catalyst.

Irina of Carim is a maiden locked in a cell near the tower at the end of the Settlement, and her grumpy protector Eygon of Carim won't help. You can either try dropping into the gorge behind him, or traveling to the far side of the Settlement where a giant is peppering the area with large arrows to search the gravestones above for Mortician's Ashes, which can be given to the Firelink Handmaid who will then sell you key to a door in the sewers underneath the settlement leading all the way back to Irina. Irina will sell you miracles if you let her, and Eygon will then assist you for certain boss fights if you want to summon him.

Find Two Secret Covenants

When in the Undead Settlement, you can join two covenants if you explore in the right places. From the central pyre near the middle of the settlement, look for a small dark alley on the left and enter the building, and look for a hole in the floor in the room full of corpses. Down here you'll find the insignia of the Warriors of Sunlight Covenant, letting you perform jolly cooperation with other players. Praise the Sun!

Back at the pyre, head right instead to cross the bridge, and go right around the building to a narrow cliff passage filled with dart-blowing Thralls. Defeat them and climb up the ladder on the far house, and jump over the right side of the house where a large Butcher is carrying a steel cage on his back.

If you inspect the cage (And have not engaged the Curse-rotted Greatwood boss), you'll be taken to a secret area to find a man who will induct you into the Mound Makers Covenant, letting you invade other players as a purple phantom who takes no sides.

Help Out Siegward

At the end of the Undead Settlement, you'll come upon a large tower with a lift where Siegward of Catarina pops out. You can solve his elevator problems by activating the lift then jumping off to find another lift coming from above. After taking the lift up and speaking to the giant archer, taking it back down you may spot a platform halfway up. Jumping off at the platform you'll find Siegward, who is watching a Demon rampage around the settlement. Jump off to engage and Siegward will follow. You can team up to kill it and get a Fire Gem, plus some great emotes and Siegbrau from Siegward!

If there's a logo we love seeing in front of a movie more than most, it's those three, vintage font, RGB animated characters A24. More often than not seeing that logo means you're in for a treat. Just what kind of treatment is anyone's guess, but horror, sci-fi, fantasy, coming of age, and every genre in between, A24 strives for a distinct vibe and an interesting voice, which is why they deserve their own Movie List. So here are our picks for the 10 best A24 films.Whatever genre they dabble in, the distributor turned production company puts its unmistakable mark on their films. They do science fiction films with big ideas and small budgets like Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell in The Lobster, or Robert Pattinson and a baby hurtling toward a black hole in High Life. They do every flavor of horror imaginable, from Ti West and his survival horror X to supernatural Giallo throwbacks like In Fabric and existential dread fests like A Ghost Story from David Lowery or The Blackcoat's Daughter. And big-name stars do some of their best work in independent films like Ryan Reynolds in Mississippi Grind, Ethan Hawke in First Reformed, Nicole Kidman in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, or Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse. The point here is, that A24 has an incredible batting average when it comes to tastemaking indie cinema and they've only been around for 10 years. This Movie List was written by Matt Fowler and edited by Kalani Newman. The Picks10 - Debut features - Lady Bird (2017) dir.
